Description
Last month the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) secured a prime piece of property (203 acres) in the northeast corner of Hayden Lake. This parcel was initially slated for a 25-lot subdivision from Tall Pines Lakewood Estates LLC, which could have significantly contributed to the water quality issues that have plagued the lake over the last decade.
This wetland area is vital to the filtration of Hayden Lake, especially since it has no natural outlet. If the hillside had been developed, nutrient-rich runoff could contribute to algae growth in the lake. The property also contains a tributary stream to Hayden Creek, which provides important spawning and rearing habitat for Hayden Lake?s cutthroat trout population.
This is just one small piece that complements the IDFG Albeni Falls Wildlife Mitigation Project, which was developed to protect, restore, enhance, and maintain the long-term quality of wetland and riparian habitat in northern Idaho and eastern Washington as ongoing mitigation for the construction and inundation of the Albeni Falls hydroelectric project.
Join the Kootenai Environmental Alliance at Noon on Thursday, April 21st at The Iron Horse Restaurant to hear from Mitigation Biologist for Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Kathy Cousins discuss this project as well as Karen Hayes, KEA Board Member and Hayden Lake enthusiast.
