Description
Join the Kootenai Environmental Alliance at Noon on Thursday, March 17th at The Iron Horse Restaurant to hear wildlife biologist Jerry Boggs, PhD discuss the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the loss of protections that could threaten the survival of the Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf and the continued effectiveness of the ESA.
There are many ways that people can push wildlife populations toward extinction: destruction of habitat, pollution, hunting, predator control, and more. The Endangered Species Act provides for the conservation of threatened and endangered plants and animals and the habitats in which they are found.
Although the fight to preserve the integrity of the ESA has been an ongoing process since it was enacted in 1973, several members of the current Senate and Congress recently introduced bills that will weaken the protections afforded to endangered species under the ESA, specifically using legislative methods to remove wolves from the Northern Rockies from ESA protection, establishing a precedent that could be used to delete many other ?bothersome? species.
The ESA provides strong protection for species in peril. It was created to bring species which are on the brink of extinction back to a healthy population level based on the best available science.
If these bills pass, Congress could proceed to manage wildlife on a species by species basis- setting a terrible precedent for wildlife conservation in our nation and undermining future protections for animals like the polar bear, salmon, grizzly bears, and whales.
Join us to learn more and have the opportunity to take action and speak out for protections for wolves and other endangered species.
KEEP THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT STRONG!
