The greater Coeur d'Alene area has a rich history of natural resources ranging from timber, agriculture to mining. Today both mining and timber continue to play an important role in the area's economy.

The Chamber's Natural Resources Committee is hosting a Timber Tour to share more on this important industry. During the tour participants will learn of the timber industry and see contemporary practices in nursery technology including seed collection, extraction and seedlings followed by in-the-field visits to several tree plantations to see firsthand timber sales, regeneration and the modern equipment used to manage private and public forest lands. The tour will end with a visit to Idaho Forest Group’s Chilco Mill to better understand the value added forest products produced in North Idaho area.

Participants will meet with forestry professionals from Stimson Lumber Company and Idaho Forest Group together and with representatives from public agencies such as Idaho Department of Lands and US Forest Service. It is through the private-public cooperation that the timber and forest product industry continues to provide important jobs and economic diversity to the region.

The tour includes a visit to Farragut State Park where lunch will be served and a presentation on hazardous fuels within the park and their treatment will be given. In addition to the lunch, Idaho Forest Group will host a dinner following the mill tour to complete the day.

The tour begins at 9:00 am and participate need to arrive at the US Forest Service/BLM office located at 3815 Schreiber Way by 8:30. Participants will be returned to the office around 7:00 pm following the tour and dinner. The cost is $25 per person and includes transportations, meals and tour materials. To register please follow the links to the right to contact Bev Davis. Limited space available.

The 2011 Timber Tour is sponsored by Idaho Forest Group, Stimson Lumber Company, Idaho Department of Land, US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management and facilitated by the Chamber’s Natural Resource Committee.
